Tinubu Appoints Retired General Adeyinka Fadewa as Homeland Security Adviser

President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security.

The appointment was announced in a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary of the General Services Office, Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, on Monday.

According to the statement, the new appointment reflects the administration’s determination to strengthen internal security coordination, improve intelligence-led operations, and enhance collaboration among security agencies in addressing emerging threats across the country.

The Presidency described Fadewa as a highly decorated retired military officer with more than 30 years of experience spanning military operations, intelligence coordination, counter-terrorism, national security strategy, and international security diplomacy.

The statement noted that he played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s intelligence coordination system while serving as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser between 2015 and 2021.

During that period, he reportedly led efforts that resulted in the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre at the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The platform was designed to integrate intelligence gathering and strategic coordination among key agencies, including the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces.

According to the Presidency, the initiative significantly improved national threat assessment and multi-agency response coordination.

Following his retirement from active military service, Fadewa served as a Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, where he contributed to policy discussions on national security reform, policing, and civil-security relations.

He is also credited with authoring a monograph titled Policing and National Security in Nigeria, which the government said provides practical recommendations for strengthening cooperation between civilian institutions and security agencies.

Akume stated that President Tinubu believes the retired general’s experience and expertise will help strengthen the administration’s efforts to improve national security through better intelligence integration, coordinated homeland security initiatives, and proactive risk management.

The President also urged Fadewa to apply his strategic experience in support of the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Nigeria has continued to battle rising insecurity in different parts of the country, including terrorism, kidnapping, banditry, and other violent crimes, leading to increasing calls for improved intelligence sharing and stronger coordination among security agencies.

The new role marks the first time the position of Special Adviser on Homeland Security has been created in Nigeria.
