A Nigerian national has been arrested in Thailand in connection with an alleged cocaine trafficking network operating within Bangkok’s nightlife districts.
According to the Bangkok Post, Metropolitan Police Bureau chief Pol Lt Gen Sayam Boonsom confirmed that officers arrested 46-year-old Nwaiwu Ifeanyi Placid during a targeted operation against the syndicate.
Police said the suspect was tracked and arrested near Silom Soi 1, where approximately 27 grammes of cocaine were recovered.
Three other individuals were also arrested on drug possession charges. They include Swiss national Thomas Giubibini, alongside two Thai suspects identified as Thanayot Asawamethi, 35, and Nattawat Wangkitjinda, 34.
Authorities stated that total seizures from the operation included about 30 grammes of cocaine, a vehicle, 1.5 million baht in cash, foreign currency valued at 15,000 baht, and jewellery worth around 400,000 baht.
Police linked the latest arrests to earlier crackdowns on the same network. They noted that on October 26 last year, officers carried out an operation in the Nana area, arresting nine Nigerian suspects after posing as construction workers.
A further raid on January 23 reportedly led to additional arrests and the confiscation of assets worth more than 7 million baht.
Investigators also identified another Nigerian suspect, known as “Patrick,” aged 47, as a key figure in the network. He is believed to have lived in Thailand for at least 17 years and allegedly ran a “middleman-free” drug distribution system.
Police said they monitored communication channels and tracked movements within online chat groups before carrying out the arrests.
Deputy commissioner Pol Maj Gen Theeradet Thamsuthee stated that one of the suspects resisted arrest but was eventually restrained by officers. He also added that the suspect later allegedly confessed to the charges.
Authorities say investigations are still ongoing, and all suspects remain in custody as efforts continue to dismantle the network.
