The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has alerted Nigerians to the presence of unregistered and suspected counterfeit Colgate toothpaste in the market.
In a statement shared on its official X handle on Sunday, the agency disclosed that its Post-Marketing Surveillance Directorate received a report about the distribution of the products in Kaduna State, which led to further investigation.
According to NAFDAC, officials visited a sales outlet where two suspected fake products labelled “Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g” were discovered.
The shop owner reportedly told investigators that the items were obtained from a door-to-door sales agent but could not provide any proof of purchase.
NAFDAC noted that the products failed to meet required regulatory standards for registration and quality assurance, warning that they may pose serious risks to public health. The agency confirmed that the items have since been removed from circulation, while efforts are ongoing to trace those responsible for their distribution.
Further details revealed that the affected products include “Coglaet Crema Dental Herbal 100g” and “Coglaet ActivGel 100g,” both lacking batch numbers and NAFDAC registration details. They were labelled as manufactured by Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, based in Baiyun District, Guangzhou, China, with production dates listed as August 2025 and expiry dates of August 2029.
The agency has directed its zonal directors and state coordinators to strengthen surveillance and ensure that any remaining counterfeit products are identified and removed from circulation.
NAFDAC also advised distributors, retailers, and consumers to be vigilant by checking the authenticity and condition of products before purchase or use.
Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspected counterfeit or substandard products to the nearest NAFDAC office, call 0800-162-3322, or send an email to sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
Healthcare professionals and consumers were further urged to report any adverse reactions linked to such products through NAFDAC’s official channels, including its website and the Med-Safety mobile application.
