Divorced Woman Tells Court: “I Have Nowhere to Go” After 30-Year Marriage Ends

A 44-year-old woman, Zainab Isah, broke down in tears on Monday at a Shari’a Court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna State, as she told the court she has nowhere to go following her divorce.

Isah explained that she was married off at the age of 14 and spent about 30 years with her husband, Alhaji Abdulhamid, during which she gave birth to 10 children.

“I have nowhere to go. I have been married to him for 30 years and I gave him 10 children,” she said emotionally.

She told the court that her husband ended the marriage on January 1 and that she was still observing her Islamic waiting period, known as Iddah, as required under Islamic law.

“I lived in peace with my co-wives, but I cannot leave my children for them. Three of my children are sick,” she added.

Counsel representing the husband, Abdulrashid Musa, urged the court to order Isah to vacate the marital home, arguing that the divorce had already been pronounced twice, including once on December 29, 2025.

He maintained that she had completed her waiting period and was refusing to leave the residence despite attempts to resolve the matter amicably.

However, Isah insisted she had not completed her Iddah and stressed that she needed to remain close to her children, particularly those who are ill.

The husband’s lawyer also informed the court that his client was willing to assist her with accommodation expenses once she finds a new place to stay with the children.

In his ruling, Judge Malam Mu’awiya Shehu held that a husband’s obligation for shelter and maintenance ends after divorce, stating that only the children remain entitled to care.

The court adjourned the case to June 1 and directed Isah to secure alternative accommodation and report back on progress.
