Trump Envoy Suggests Italy Replace Iran at 2026 World Cup

A representative of US President Donald Trump, Paolo Zampolli, has suggested that Italy be considered as a replacement for Iran at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The proposal is reportedly part of a broader effort to mend strained relations between Trump and Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. The relationship had been affected by disagreements, including Trump’s criticism of Pope Leo XIV over the Iran conflict.
Zampolli confirmed that he had raised the idea with both Trump and FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He noted that, as an Italian, he would welcome the opportunity to see the national team participate in a tournament being hosted by the United States.
He also pointed to Italy’s strong football history, highlighting the country’s four World Cup titles as justification for its inclusion.
However, Italy did not qualify for the 2026 tournament after suffering a 4-1 defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina in a qualifying play-off match in March.
