Poor Network Service: NCC Pressured MTN, Others to Compensate Subscribers — Olanrewaju

Tobi Olanrewaju, a telecommunications expert and President of the National Consumers Advocacy Network (NCAN), has shed light on how the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) compelled major mobile network operators to compensate subscribers over poor service delivery.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Olanrewaju said the decision by companies such as MTN Nigeria, Airtel, and Glo followed firm, consumer-focused regulatory action by the NCC under its Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida.

He described the directive as a turning point in how telecom regulations are enforced in Nigeria, noting that it prioritises the interests of everyday users.

According to him, Nigerian subscribers have long endured poor network quality without any real consequences for service providers. He said the NCC’s latest move signals a shift toward accountability and meaningful consumer protection.

Olanrewaju added that the development goes beyond compensation, highlighting its importance in rebuilding public trust in the telecommunications sector.

He also urged other regulatory bodies in the country to take a cue from the NCC’s approach, especially at a time when many Nigerians are facing economic challenges.

He stressed that policies with direct impact on citizens’ daily lives should be given priority, noting that effective regulation can drive both social and economic fairness when properly implemented.

Meanwhile, it was reported that MTN Nigeria had already compensated its subscribers last month by issuing airtime following widespread complaints about poor network service.
