Nigeria’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Austria and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr Florence Ajimobi, has been appointed Nigeria’s Governor on the IAEA Board of Governors for the 2026–2028 term.

Her appointment followed Nigeria’s election to the 35-member Board during the 70th Regular Session of the IAEA General Conference in Vienna, Austria.

A statement from Ajimobi’s media office in Ibadan, Oyo State, said the new role would place her at the centre of Nigeria’s participation in one of the IAEA’s key policy-making bodies.

As Nigeria’s Governor on the Board, Ajimobi will take part in deliberations on the agency’s programmes, nuclear safety and security, safeguards, peaceful applications of nuclear science and technology, as well as international cooperation.

The statement said Ajimobi would also represent and advance Nigeria’s positions during Board meetings while contributing to discussions concerning the IAEA’s policies and activities.

It added that Nigeria’s election to the Board, alongside Ajimobi’s appointment, would strengthen the country’s engagement with the agency and reinforce its commitment to the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology for sustainable development.

The new position is also expected to provide Nigeria with a broader platform for international cooperation in areas where nuclear technology can contribute to national development, including healthcare, agriculture, food security, water-resource management and human-capacity development.

Ajimobi, who serves as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Austria and Permanent Representative to the IAEA and other international organisations in Vienna, is expected to use the assignment to advance Nigeria’s interests within the international nuclear governance system.

Ajimobi is the widow of Abiola Ajimobi, the late former Governor of Oyo State, who served as governor from 2011 to 2019 on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
