Abia State University, Uturu, has lifted the suspension of a lecturer in its Department of Economics, Prof. Nnamdi Nwaeze, following a plea by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ABSU chapter.

The university communicated the decision in a letter dated September 3, 2026, signed by its Acting Registrar, Dr Joy Nwankwo.

The letter, titled “Lifting of Suspension,” stated that the decision was taken after ASUU-ABSU submitted a written plea on behalf of the lecturer.

“Following a written plea from ASUU-ABSU, the University Management hereby lifts your suspension effective immediately.

“This lifting is, however, without prejudice to the extant investigative panel on you, whose ultimate report is being awaited,” the letter read.

Nwaeze had earlier criticised the conditions at the university in a post on his Facebook page, raising concerns over low salaries, unpaid salaries and allowances, among other issues.

Following the post, the university suspended him indefinitely and constituted an investigative panel to examine the issues surrounding his comments.

His suspension subsequently triggered industrial action by the ABSU chapter of ASUU, which listed his recall as one of its conditions for ending the strike.

The Abia State Government had distanced itself from the issue, describing the lecturer’s suspension as an internal matter of the university. However, Governor Alex Otti later met some of the demands put forward by the union.

Confirming the lifting of the suspension on Saturday, ASUU-ABSU Chairman, Prof. Chidi Mba, said the union would continue to handle the matter through administrative channels.

“Yes, the University has lifted the suspension. However, I cannot comment on the content. We are handling it administratively,” he stated.
