Abia State has recorded significant progress in revenue generation and capital development, according to a report presented by the state government.

The government also highlighted ongoing initiatives in healthcare, infrastructure and transportation as part of efforts to improve services and living conditions across the state.

Speaking on the healthcare sector, the Commissioner announced the formal launch of the Ameke Community Scheme for September 16, 2026, with 1,000 individuals expected to be enrolled at ₦18,000 per person.

The programme represents an initial outlay of ₦18 million.

He added that the recruitment portal for additional medical personnel, including consultants, medical officers and dental officers, remained open.

The Commissioner further confirmed that no cases of Ebola, Lassa fever, COVID-19, diphtheria, cholera, Mpox or yellow fever were reported in the state during the period under review.

On infrastructure, Kanu disclosed that the state government had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Nigerian Railway Corporation for the construction of a 200-metre road extension from Bende Road, linking Umuwaya Road by Post Office Tower, through the railway crossing to the Library Avenue areas.

“The state will also reconstruct the abandoned road from First Bank to Keystone Bank to ease traffic around Okpara Avenue,” he said.

Kanu also announced significant progress on the Emede-Ibeku Flood Patrol Project.

According to him, site clearing had been completed, while embankment construction had reached 90 per cent completion. Drainage excavation and concreting were each at 80 per cent.

He added that properties with structural defects had been sealed off as a safety measure.

The Commissioner further disclosed that the expansion of ticketing facilities and installation of solar mini-grid carports to provide 24-hour power supply at the Nnenna Oti Bus Terminal in Umuahia were ongoing and had reached 60 per cent completion.

He said the project was targeted for completion by December 2026.

On public transportation, Kanu disclosed that the Abia Green Shuttle Bus Service had transported a total of 560,784 passengers to date.

He explained that 196,950 passengers used the service between December 2025 and February 2026 when ridership was free, while 303,834 passengers benefited from subsidised fares between March and August 2026 following the commencement of commercial operations.

“This is an indication that a lot of Abians and residents are using the bus services and taking advantage of the exquisite services being rendered,” Kanu said.
